Sillimanite

Sillimanite (Al₂SiO₅) is a highly valued alumino-silicate mineral that stands out for its remarkable refractoriness, high alumina content, and superior resistance to thermal and chemical stresses. It is one of the three natural polymorphs of aluminum silicate—Sillimanite, Kyanite, and Andalusite—each having the same chemical composition but different crystal structures. Among these, Sillimanite is the most stable form at high temperatures, making it the preferred choice for manufacturing advanced refractory materials.

Dev International offers premium-grade Sillimanite, sourced from rich deposits and processed through state-of-the-art beneficiation plants. Our Sillimanite exhibits exceptional purity, controlled particle size, and minimal impurities, ensuring consistent performance in the most demanding industrial conditions.

Sillimanite occurs naturally in metamorphic rocks such as schists and gneisses, formed under high pressure and temperature conditions. It is usually found as fibrous, needle-like, or prismatic crystals and may appear in shades of brown, green, gray, or colorless. The mineral has a hardness of 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of around 3.2. Its dense structure and thermal integrity make it ideal for long-term industrial use.

Key Characteristics & Advantages:
  • High Alumina (Al₂O₃ 58–62%) and Low Iron Content (<1.5%), ensuring high refractoriness.
  • Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance – withstands repeated heating and cooling cycles without cracking.
  • Converts to Mullite and Silica on heating above 1545°C, forming a strong, interlocking microstructure that enhances refractory strength.
  • Exceptional Dimensional Stability under fluctuating temperatures.
  • Highly Resistant to Slag, Alkali Vapors, and Corrosive Atmospheres, extending the life of furnace linings.
  • Low Thermal Expansion ensures reliable structural performance.
  • Environmentally Friendly Mineral, free from toxic substances.
Industrial Applications:

Sillimanite supplied by Dev International finds wide applications across multiple industries where high temperature and corrosion resistance are critical:

1. Refractory Industry:
  • Manufacturing of high-alumina refractory bricks, monolithic linings, and shapes.
  • Ideal for use in steel, cement, glass, and non-ferrous metal furnaces.
  • Used in burner blocks, furnace crowns, hearths, and kiln furniture.
2. Steel & Metallurgical Industry:
  • Used in slide gates, ladle nozzles, and tundish refractories due to its stability against molten metals and slag.
  • Maintains mechanical strength and thermal integrity even in continuous casting operations.
3. Ceramic Industry:
  • An essential component for porcelain insulators, spark plugs, and high-voltage ceramic bodies.
  • Improves density, reduces shrinkage, and enhances mechanical strength in fired ceramics.
4. Glass Industry:
  • Applied in furnace insulation, glass tank crowns, and checker bricks due to its low contamination potential and excellent heat retention.
5. Investment Casting & Foundry Applications:
  • Used as a mold coating and core sand additive, providing smooth surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
6. Other Specialized Uses:
  • High-temperature kiln furniture, crucibles, and metallurgical ceramics.
Packaging Options:
  • 25/50 kg HDPE laminated bags.
  • 1 MT Jumbo bags (moisture-proof and export-worthy).
  • Custom packaging as per client’s requirement.
  • Available forms: Lumps, Grains, and Fine Powder.
